I’m a lucky guy. I continue to value my work b/c of the students I get to mentor, advise, challenge, support, praise, assist, and guide. After nearly 24 years in student development/higher ed, I can still say that with total assurance. And while I continue to learn from them every day, it’s my many ACUI colleagues from whom I have learned to be the leader I hope I am. Their support, feedback, advice, help, hand-holding, and late night power-chats have helped me with whatever success I’ve had and hope to have, and helped me learn about this crazy field of ours. What’s really great is that this weekend, I get to join 1,000 folks at the ACUI Annual Conference who do the same kind of work.

I’ve been doing this work for quite a while and it’s nice to have colleagues who understand our work and not get those head-tilts that really say, “oh, you plan the fun things.” I”m sure you know what I mean, right? If my work were just about planning “parties,” I would walk away in a second. It’s the joy of strategy, collegiality, leadership, community, witnessing the maturation of our students, developing lifetime friendships with some of them, enhancing campus climate, collaboration, transforming a university, and transforming lives. That keeps me going. It’s exhausting, but so worth it in the end.

So here’s to Rich, Marsha, Eddie, Jimmy, Debra, Sarah, Sharon, multiple Patrick’s, Dave, Leah, Candy, Jim, Matt, Rene, Adam, multiple Michael’s, Mandy, JimBeaux, Gary, Holly, LeNorman, multiple Dave’s, Bill, Brian, Paul, Michelle, Susan, Rob, etc, etc, etc. The list goes on & on & on. What an honor to know y’all.

Thanks for keeping me sane, taking my calls/emails/texts, and for making me better. Cheers.

Slowly but surely, we are beginning to call certain spaces in the new HUB by names other than their number (Rm. 307). This is all unofficial, but I like the direction. For instance, the multipurpose space is being called the Lyceum, and the new mtg room on the 2nd floor immediately above the main entrance is being call the Headhouse. This is an unusual step for the HUB who historically used room numbers. Whenever we can settle on a room that ASUW Senate might utilize for their mtgs, I’m certain that it will be referred to as the Senate Room or Senate Chamber (even though there is no tiered seating…which was cost prohibitive and has limited uses). But what to do with the others? It’s been suggested that the names of former UW mascots be used, which is an idea I really like. It enhances the idea of campus spirit & tradition (i.e., Purple Revolution!!).

Just wish we had figured this out before our sign package was determined. How cool would it be to select from former mascot names like: Frosty I, Frosty II, Wasky, Wasky II, Ski, Denali, King Chinook, King Redoubt, or Sundodger??

Even it’s too late to change the sign package, I hope we can incorporate some of the mascot names into the student union.

By the way: we move staff into the HUB in SIX MONTHS.

Good luck on finals next week, y’all. Go, Dawgs.

I can’t let another minute pass without expressing my deepest & sincere appreciation to the many, many individuals who are working on the HUB renovation/construction. Each day there are 140-155 folks working on the project and that doesn’t include the ones who reside in Construction Trailer City. The contractors, subs, architects and our Capital Projects colleagues have shown an immense level of patience with us as we continue to share the project with the campus community.

Each week we host late afternoon tours for students, faculty, administration and staff. I can only imagine how disconcerting (and odd) this idea was 1.5 years ago, but CPO, contractors, and sub-contractors have been extremely supportive, patient, and understanding with our 60 minute jaunts through the project.

So I just want to say thank you to everyone who puts up with our weekly intrusions. We will do our best to stay out the way of the important work that’s going on inside, while continuing to share the University’s community center with the University.

6.5 months to move-in. Yikes. Lincoln

Bow Down to Washington…! Each time we take students and campus colleagues on our weekly HUB Hard Hat Tours, the changes are rather drastic and kind of amazing. Lately this has gotten more exhilarating because interior surfaces are beginning to take shape. In addition to the goals/objectives set by 3-4 years of HUB Building Committees, I wanted to ensure that HUB reflects the spirit and culture of U-Dub. This isn’t the easiest thing to do when costs are considered, but we are doing what we can to put the purple & gold into the student union. Husky Purple is being used throughout the building; the first wall to be painted was the accent wall in the HUB Commuter Center on the 1st floor. That was 2.5 weeks ago and as of last Friday, purple walls now exist in the ASUW suite as well.

I almost yelled with pride when I saw the first purple accent ceramic tiles in the basement restrooms. Can’t wait to see how the yellow accent tiles on alternating floors look. The restrooms on every other floor will have white & purple tiles and the others will have white & yellow tiles.

There are many things similar about student unions at other campuses, no one will be able to say that the HUB could belong to any other campus (well, except for LSU?). While our budget won’t allow us to inscribe the words of the UW Fight Song or the Song of Washington (“Rise up with pride for Washington, For Purple and for Gold…As Huskies proud and bold…”), I am excited about one particular feature of the HUB.

The 1st floor lobby will feature a big “W” in purple terrazzo not far from the HUB Information Desk and the new UW/Admissions Welcome Center. The architects weren’t sure about this at first, but they grew to appreciate it once they heard of the excitement of former and current students.

As always, we are honored to serve as stewards of this amazing project. What a treat. Stay tuned for more updates on the project. Hope mid-terms are going well for everyone. Cheers. Lincoln

Hey, y’all. The HUB closed in June 2010 and reopens in 2012. Some might think that the massive fence that encircles the construction zone and trailer-opolis would mean that no one gets to see what’s going on inside. Think again. One of my goals has been to share the project with as many students, student leaders, and departments as possible, and we have tried to maintain that goal by hosting weekly HUB Hard Hat Tours. And sometimes we do a couple a week. I don’t have an exact number of tours, but between Paul, our Associate Director and me, my best estimate is that we have hosted 65-75 tours so far. And I would bet that I’m undercutting that number by a bit.

To see the HUB through the eyes of students and colleagues gives me hope that the HUB will truly meet the needs of our campus and enhance the sense and spirit of community. It’s easy to get disillusioned and harried from day to day logistics, always constant issues, and the “oh, crud” moments (“you mean it looks like that…I thought the doorway was over there…you mean that it’s smaller than we were told??”).

The tours are popular enough that the weekly tour schedule is filled till the middle of May 2012. Which brings the HUB staff great joy. As we get closer to our return home, we are constantly filled with pride (and greatly humbled) to be stewards of this project.

For those who continue to encourage me to get off my ass and blog a little something, I really appreciate it. Just hope you enjoy reading Lincoln (b)Logs. Go, Dawgs!

It might be my imagination, but it seems like everyone is more anxious, stressed, and “on edge” right now (myself included). Whether this related to those mid-terms that extend till the last week of classes, the writing of papers at 1:30am, too many meetings, a gargantuan queue, the constant economic woes (the “new normal”), over-celebrating the tremendous Apple Cup win, not finding time to breathe, the cold/wet, working too many hours, the nightfall at 4:15pm, or all of the above, I can certainly sense the multiple layers of anxiety and stress. Sure hope that things get a bit easier as we get into the month of December. Remember to breathe and keep your perspective (these words of advice are as much for me as for y’all).

Took another group of students through the HUB this week. Always a joy to see the excitement on their faces as we walk through the construction zone. The contractors are pumping heat into the HUB now that the exterior openings are covered. In the next few weeks, the jewel-box entrances will begin to take shape. This will certainly be a highlight to those who walk by the HUB all the time. Talk about making a statement. I cannot wait to see them take shape.

Office spaces are also taking shape; metal studs are up throughout the HUB and you can finally see the configuration/shape for the ASUW Office suites. Rather than being spread over 6 stories of the HUB, all of ASUW will be housed on the 1st floor and in the same footprint (except for the ASUW Bike Shop who will have a new shop on the exterior of student union).

Our students are 1.5 weeks away from fall quarter final exams which means that studies will (should!) take precedence very soon. Hope the final papers and exams go extremely well for each of you.

Till next time…cheers! Lincoln
